My thoughts on... Aloma by Mercè Rodoreda

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐(5/5)
Mercè Rodoreda (1908-1983) was a Catalan fiction writer and is believed to be the most influencial novelist in Catalan language of the 20th century. Her works have been translated into more than thirty languages and she received many prizes for many of her novels, one of the most important ones being the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes in 1980. Her novels are bitter and reflect the difficulties and the pain she had to go through in her life as a woman during the hard times of the Spanish Civil War and during her exile in France after the war was over.

Aloma is about a teenager named Aloma who lives in Barcelona and has had quite a tragic life. After losing her parents and one of her older brothers to suicide she now lives with her other older brother, his wife and her nephew. They are so poor that they can't afford sending the kids to school which contributes to her isolation from the outer world. She likes reading and writing and even though she only has contact with her family and with her neighbours she has quite a modern opinion. For example she openly argues that she will never get married because she doesn't believe that women should be dependent on a man. Through the book we are explained that in the year the story is set, 1934, women weren't allowed to do many things by themselves without men and those who didn't get married had a bad reputation. Aloma has no friends and is quite taciturn which is compensated by her broad inner world.

Just like all the other Rodoreda's heroins, we get to know Aloma though her introspective monologues and the developement of her inner world. Mercè Rodoreda writes psicological novels where the feelings and thoughts of her main characters are the most important thing in the story. Her heroins deal with loneliness, lack of communication, maternity and being submitted to men. Their house is usually their refuge, where they can be themselves and isolate from the scary world.

I was ashamed to say that at my 26 and a half years old this was my first time reading a book from Mercè Rodoreda. I think the reason why I hadn't read anything from her yet may have been because I was scared of not liking her so-prized novels. Now I realise that waiting and not reading it too early in my life turned out to be the best idea. In Aloma I found a friend who was going through hard times and I think that my age and my experiences helped me to better understand her decisions and believes.

Gabriel García Márquez appreciated Rodoreda's works and wrote an article about her after she died. He explains that he enjoyed the novels so much that he even read them in their original language which is Catalan. You can read it here: ¿Sabe usted quién era Mercè Rodoreda? by Gabriel García Márquez

And you can find a quite exhaustive briography here: Mercè Rodoreda (1908-1983)

  7. Well, if Gabe loved her..then she's got to fantastic. I love most of his work. Although, 100 years of solitude has to be the only book I have ever read that gave me an epiphany! I am glad you read her book.

Sorry if I offended you in my post.

  22. ¡Hola, hola!

¡Beso enorme!

    Un beso!
